What's the first thing you do when you arrive in a new city? Drink, eat something and settle into your accommodation? Doing laundry doesn't come to mind. Does? It wouldn't be anywhere near the top of the list for most people. So let me tell you why you should consider doing your laundry at The Washhouse if visiting Manchester.
laundry, localizada em Manchester, na Inglaterra, não é uma lavanderia qualquer. Mas nem tudo é o que parece. Ele tem um segredo que está esperando para ser descoberto por você.
I know you're thinking, "Do you want me to go to a laundromat?" Wait though, hear me out.

take a good look around
It's a quirky throwback to the prohibition era. Looking out the front window of The Washhouse, everything seems innocuous. You see a black and white checkerboard floor, stainless steel washers, and a giant dryer. As expected, you can see a laundry basket and some washing powder on top of the washing machine. There's a rotary phone on a shelf near the wall, and a TV camera watches you in the right corner.
Everything screams at you that there is nothing to see here. I'm sure many have walked past this place without giving it much thought. It's a shame, because they are the ones who are losing.

After a flight delay of 34 hours, my plane finally arrived in Manchester, England. We land before 7 pm local time. Passport control took about an hour to clear the non-EU line. I had a reservation for Lavadero at 9pm. For me, this was the only time I could come. The next day there were no vacancies and I was flying out the next night.
From the airport, I called an Uber and I was on my way. Remember where to visit; You have to book a wash or spin to access it. Don't come to Lavadero without a reservation. You will not be allowed in without a reservation. You can book your time and the number of layers (persons) onlineon here.

On their social media pages you can also see updates on which slots are available. Once inside, I picked up the phone and contacted a person who verified my appointment. After a moment, the big dryer, without warning, opened into a dark hallway. Jamie greeted me and led me into the dark interior to sit at a corner table.
Pendant lamps low over the tables and candles provide ample lighting. I found a welcoming environment. Exposed brickwork and dark leather seating blend well with the ambience of this speakeasy. Music is playing, but it's soft and not overpowering. You will see a cocktail menu and a small bowl of chips (snacks) on the table. Jamie walked me through the list and through the different variations and origins of the drinks. I could see Tom creating these detailed mixes for other guests at the bar.

Enjoy some innovative drinks
My first drink order was "This Mary Ain't Going No-where". A version of a Bloody Mary with some welcome spice and a great chorizo and chipotle flavor combination. I like a bloody mary done right, and this is one of the best I've ever had.

So I followed it up with a proper British brew. How not to have a Gin & Tonic when visiting the UK? The cocktail was a mix of basil infused ice cream to which tonic water is added. Later I realized I forgot to take a picture of the menu description :/

To close my time on these "Brexit Holidays", I chose to end the night with a fun drink called Soft Brex-fast. It looks like cereal, so much fun when you play with your food and drink. (His picture is at the top of the post)
Sal de tu zona de confort
They kindly gave me a sample of the drink called “Up Stream” as I was intrigued by the description. You can see this in the last menu card below. Who would order a salmon-flavored cocktail? I was curious to know how this would give the preparation and taste. Indeed, it was fulfilled as promised. Not my thing, but I finished it and ticked it off on the quirky and unique experiences board.

A younger couple sitting next to me were enjoying their drinks. One of the cocktails they ordered came with a combination lock. You had to solve the riddle before drinking it. Another came with a marshmallow and a blowtorch. I know, it's exciting to play with food or drink! But these aren't your boring, run-of-the-mill everyday drinks. Laundry is doing things right. Its inventive and quirky drink combinations and plenty of creativity await you.
The couple ended the night ordering a drink called Cigarettes and Alcohol (seen in the first menu below). This gave them great pleasure and many photo opportunities. Jamie described it as one of his favorites on the menu. A drink that once again lives up to the description. The best thing is that it comes with a vape pen. So you're vaping alcohol (in small amounts, mind you). This cocktail was very different and brought a lot of laughs. I declined the opportunity to test the pen when it was offered to me.

Hidden bars or speakeasies are popularizing and gaining ground again, building a history of popularity during prohibition. Alcohol was illegal and secret bars and unlicensed drinking venues sprang up.

After all, it's a great feeling to get caught up in all that washing. Who knew a night out at The Washhouse in Manchester could be so much fun?
I'm not a big cocktail drinker, but I enjoyed this experience. I was glad I had heard about the laundromat before I left and incorporated it into my plans.
