In February 2016, ConcernedApe released Stardew Valley. It was an indie farming simulator only released for Windows but proved very popular and so the game was soon released on all major gaming platforms including Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, iOS and Android devices as well macOS and Linux.
In Stardew Valley, players control a young man who inherits a farm in Pelican Town from his grandfather. After being overwhelmed by blind labor, a young man moves to Pelican Town to renovate his grandfather's farm.

Stardew Valley's extensive gameplay sets it apart from other farming simulators on the market. Additionally, there is a social aspect to be mindful of when interacting with NPCs.
Players have to do much more than just plant and harvest crops. Farming, Fishing, Gathering, Mining and Combat are the 5 main abilities of Stardew Valley.
This article will focus on one of Stardew Valley's most challenging yet most important minigames - Fishing!

Fishing in Stardew Valley
Although this is a farming sim, fishing is a big part of Stardew Valley.

Once you master fishing, you'll never have to worry about money again, and you'll see how well the developers have tied together the different aspects of Stardew Valley.
For example, you can find a treasure chest while fishing.
In addition, if you manage to catch a fish, you will receive a treasure chest and the prize inside. A treasure chest can be a complete bust or contain rare items from Stardew Valley.
In other words, there's so much fishing in Stardew Valley that it's one of the hardest skills to learn. However, that's not exactly rocket science.
All it takes is a little practice and knowing when and where to fish. My guide will help you every step of the way.
So let's start with the basics.
How to fish in Stardew Valley?
Fishing is possible in Stardew Valley on the second day of play. You will receive a letter from Willy asking you to meet him at the beach. He will also give you the first fishing rod.

Welcome to the fishing industry!
Since you're on the beach, it's worth checking your fishing gear right away.
- Equip a fishing rod to cast the fishing line into the water. A counter appears on the screen as it is cast. When releasing the line, time it properly to throw the line the desired distance.
- When a fish bites, you will hear a distinct sound and see an exclamation point over your character's head. Quickly press the Use Tool button to catch the fish.
After the fish is hooked, the third and final phase of fishing begins.

- Touch the screen (or press the corresponding button depending on what device you're playing on) to hold the little fish icon on the green bar until the right gauge is full.
It's that easy when you say it, but as a longtime Stardew Valley player who's struggled with it, I can tell you it's not easy at all.
This green bar is too sensitive. If you touch it a little longer, you will lose the fish.
In addition, as your fishing skill increases, the fill gauge gets longer and longer, making it harder to keep the catch.

All you can do is practice as much as you can. There is no workaround for this - no shortcuts or cheats that would bring the fish directly into your inventory.
Here are some tips that might make it a little easier
- Practice by catching easier fish first. (Read on to find out which fish are easier to catch.)
- Use the training bar first. It features a more controllable and larger green bar.
- Cast your line as far as possible to avoid trash and increase your chances of getting a quality fish.
Finally, don't give up too easily.
Now that you know the basics, let's get to know your potential victim.
Fish species in Stardew Valley
Fishing in Stardew Valley isn't difficult just because of the game mechanics. There are many factors that make fishing so difficult.
fishingDepends on the time, the season, the bait used, the equipment used and the pond/lake/sea you choose to fish with.
So if you are chasing a specific fish, everything must be done perfectly. This is only possible if you know exactly what you are doing.

Below is a table that tells you everything you need to know about the 80+ fish you can catch in Stardew Valley.
All Stardew Valley fish are divided into five main types in the game, so I'll list them accordingly to avoid confusion.

While the night market is open (5:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.), players can catch three unique fish during the submarine cruise. Remember that the night market is a winter festival that starts on the 15th and ends on the 17th. This is what it looks like.

Here are the fish that players can catch on a submarine ride:

Legendary Fish
There are only 5 fish in Stardew Valley that can beIntercepted once per file write.
You can find them in certain places and only at certain times of the year. Legendary fish are ten times harder to catch than normal fish.

Now you can either dig up artifact sites and hope to find them"Secrets of the Legendary Fish"or use the chart below to find out and catch them all.

Pro tip:Using an iridium rod and float can increase your chances of catching a legendary fish.

There are 5 more legendary fish in Stardew Valley that become available during Qi's extended family quest.
You can find more information on this in the next chapter.
Legendary Fish II
You cannot catch the Legendary OG Fish during Mr. Qi's Extended Family Quest. However, you can catch duplicates of it.
These altered versions of Legendary Fish have different names - Legend becomes Legend II, Angler becomes Lady Angler, and Crimson Fish becomes Son of Scarlet Fish.
However, the location and prices are the same.
Here's everything you need to know about Legendary Fish II.
The name of the fish | Price (varies by quality and profession) | Location | season | day and time | fishing level |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Son of the Purple Fish | 1500g – 4500g | Strand (Ostpier) | All seasons | All day and all night | Fishing level 5 required |

In addition to fish, there are three other items to catch in Stardew Valley that improve players' fishing experience.
- white algae.
- green algae.
- Seetang.
These are random items that you can snag anywhere, any time of the year.
None of these items are rare or valuable, but if you want to 100% complete the game, you need them.
Stardew Valley Fishing Gear - Rods, Bait and Tackle!
It is important to use the right trading tools.
That's why every Stardew Valley player should know about the fishing gear available in Stardew Valley. Use the right rods, lures and tackle. and fishing becomes relatively easier.
I say "relatively" because that still doesn't guarantee a perfect catch. However, using better tools certainly helps.
Let's start with the most important thing - the fishing rod.
fishing
There are 4 fishing rods available in Stardew Valley.
As I mentioned earlier, on day two, players will receive their first fishing rod (bamboo pole) from Willy.

Each rod then becomes available as the player's fishing level increases.
Here is an overview of all 4 rods.
Name | Cena | Where to buy | Fishing skills required | Advantages |
---|---|---|---|---|
Bambusmast | 500g | Willy's fish shop. (Willy gives gifts to the player on the second day.) | No requirements. | No discernible benefit. |
Trainingsrute | 25g | Willy's fish shop | No requirements. | Bigger green bar. |
Fiberglasstab | 1800g | Willy's fish shop | Fishing level 2 | Allows the use of bait. |
Iridiumstab | 7500g | Willy's fish shop | fishing level 6 | Allows the use of bait and fishing tackle. |

Upon reaching fishing level 2, players will unlock fiber optics and with it the ability to use bait.
bait
While not necessary, using bait does have its benefits. For example, using a bait with a fishing rod will reduce the time it takes to catch fish.
Here is a list of all baits and their possibilities.
Name | Cena | Advantage |
---|---|---|
bait | 5g | Fish bite 50% faster. Less chance of catching a junk. |
Wild Bait | Cannot be bought. (Made from Fiber, Slime, and Insect Meat) | Fish bite 62.5% faster. 25% chance to catch 2 fish at the same time, |
magic bait | 5 Qi Gems for 20 Spell Bait | Catch any type of fish in any season and anywhere. |
Magnet | 1000g | 15% higher chance of a treasure chest. |

Gang
Since it requires an Iridium rod, Tackle can only be used after reaching fishing level 6.
Posting it will unlock different kits as you improve your fishing skills.
There are a total of 9 tackles in Stardew Valley.
Name | Cena | Advantage |
---|---|---|
Spinner | 500g | Fish bite 3.75 seconds faster. |
Dressed Spinner | 1000g | Fish bite 7.5 seconds faster. |
