One ofStardew ValleyFishing is a fun and rewarding activity. This is not a surprise as no farming sim game like this modern classic would have a full fishing feature and mechanic. In addition to being a source of income, fishing in Stardew Valley is an integral part of the community center.

Stardew Valley Fishing Guide (1)

Although the Stardew Valley fishing system is easy to learn, there are many levels to explore to truly master it. For an inexperienced player, all the nuances could be overwhelming. But no worry! Here's the Stardew Valley fishing guide from start to finish, including how to catch the legendary fish!

Stardew Valley Fishing: The Basics

The environment, seasons, and locations in Stardew Valley play a big part in your daily activities. This is a very simple approach to apply real world environmental effects to your game. It affects everything from the crops you can grow to the fruits you can harvest to the players' in-game schedules.

When fishing, the types of fish you can catch vary depending on your location, weather, and time of day. So this should be factored into your fishing progress.

But before you start looking for fish, you must first learn how to fish. Visit Willy at the port. Willy owns a fish shop. You'll get a quick tour of fishing mechanics and you'll get your first fishing rod. A bamboo pole can also be purchased from Willy for 500G.

(Video) Stardew Valley Fishing Guide (Tips and Tricks)

The bamboo stick is quite simple, but serves its purpose in the early stages. Although you could theoretically try to catch all kinds of fish with it, the chances of success are very small, especially since tackle cannot be used. Instead, start practicing with him and improve your fishing skills. You can try fishing on any body of water in the game.

Throwing the line over water reservoirs will launch a mini-game. A small fishing window and a fish icon with a stripe will appear. The goal is to keep the fish symbol on the green bar while the next yellow bar on the right gradually fills up. If the fish symbol is not in the green bar, the yellow bar decreases. When the yellow bar turns green and reaches the top, the fish is caught. If the opposite happens and the yellow bar turns red and disappears, the fish will run away.

Fishing Skill XP is awarded for each successfully caught fish. Failed attempts do not generate Fishing Skill XP. This can be a bit annoying, especially at the beginning. Once you reach fishing level 2 you can start crafting lures or buy them from Willy for 5G. You also need to upgrade the fiberglass pole to use bait. Willy sells them for 1500G.

Once you reach a Fishing Skill of 6 or higher, get an Iridium Rod. It costs 7500G but allows you to use bait and tackle at the same time. This makes the fishing process smoother and reduces the endurance required for the effort. In addition, it shortens the delay time between throw and bite.

(Video) The 6 Minute ULTIMATE FISHING GUIDE | Stardew Valley 1.5

One option you can choose is to use crab pots. These are traps set up at fishing stations. The good thing is you don't have to be there. You can put the crab pots down and come back later to find the fish you caught. Successful fishing will still give you Fishing Skill XP. The downside is that you only catch lower class fish and therefore don't train your twitch skills necessary for rod fishing.

When and where to look for fish

As mentioned, the fish you can catch in Stardew Valley will vary based on a number of factors, primarily location, weather conditions, and time of day. Since the community center fishing targets require specific fish, this can be difficult.

But no worry! We've provided a handy list of every fish in the game, along with the information needed to find them, in this Stardew Valley fishing guide. Keep in mind that some fish overlap (especially the ones in each season) so you really can't get all the fish in the game unless you shred them regularly.

Fishing in Stardew Valley any time of the year

These fish can be found at any time of the year and in any weather. Their only considerations are location and, in some species, time of day.

Legendary Fish

In addition to the standard fish species, Stardew Valley also has unique legendary fish. Almost all can only be caught once. The game records this in the save file itself, so there's no way to catch multiple legendary fish without cheating.

Tips for better fishing in Stardew Valley

Here are some additional suggestions that will provide you with a complete Stardew Valley fishing guide to help you develop your fishing skills and increase your chances of catching a legendary fish.

  • Use Wild Bait - Wild Bait is superior to other baits in the game as it increases your chances of catching two fish at once. To do this, you need to get the bait recipe from Linus. He will give you the recipe after you reach 4 heart levels and talk to him between 20:00 and 12:00. Make sure the weather is clear when you do this.
  • Develop your fishing skills with a training rod - a training rod can be purchased for 25G in Willy's shop. Despite being limited to 50 difficulty fish, it behaves as if you had a level 5 fishing skill, making it easier to fish and gain skill XP from fast fishing in the early stages. If you have nothing else, you can make a lot of money building up your resources.
  • Eat Fish Dishes That Increase Your Skills - There are recipes that you can use to cook fish dishes that increase your skills. They can give your fishing skill +1 to +4 for the duration. These upgrades are also applied at a maximum fishing level of 10. That means you can actually fish between levels 11 and 14, which is what the game calculates under the hood. Lower the difficulty and get the better odds you desireFishing will help you complete Stardew Valleyfishing destinations!
